Election Season Group Prayer Guide

Christian Election Prayer Guide: Updated for the 2026 Midterm Elections

Election seasons can bring uncertainty, strong opinions, division, and concern about the future. They can also remind Christians of something we should be doing in every season: praying for our nation, our leaders, our communities, and one another.

This Christian Election Prayer Guide is designed to help individuals, churches, families, and small groups spend focused time praying during the 2026 midterm election season. The prayer topics can be used together for an extended prayer gathering or individually over several days.

While 2026 is not a presidential election year, voters will choose members of Congress and many state and local leaders. In Minnesota, voters will also consider important state legislative, statewide, judicial, and local races and questions.

Christians may reach different conclusions about particular candidates and issues. During a church prayer gathering, avoid turning prayer into campaigning for individual candidates. Instead, pray for God’s wisdom, truth, righteousness, justice, mercy, and guidance. Pray for current leaders, those seeking office, election officials, voters, churches, families, and communities.

Christians should also take their responsibility as citizens seriously. Pray for wisdom to evaluate candidates, their character, their positions, and the consequences of public policies in light of biblical truth.

Most importantly, remember that our ultimate hope does not rest in an election, political party, candidate, or government. Our hope is in Jesus Christ. Whatever happens politically, God remains sovereign and the mission of the church remains unchanged.

Suggestions for a Church or Group Prayer Gathering

  • Read Scripture aloud: Begin each prayer topic by having someone read one or more of the listed Bible passages.
  • Allow time for silence: Give people opportunities for personal confession, reflection, and silent prayer.
  • Pray in smaller groups: Divide into groups and assign several prayer topics to each group.
  • Avoid campaigning: Keep the gathering centered on prayer rather than speeches for or against particular candidates.
  • Pray locally: Include the names of your community, county, schools, churches, and local leaders.
  • Pray for people, not merely issues: Remember that political questions affect real people, families, and communities.
  • Keep the gospel central: Our greatest need is reconciliation with God through Jesus Christ.
  • Continue praying after Election Day: Scripture calls Christians to pray for those in authority, not merely for the candidates we hope will win.

Our Hope Is Greater Than an Election

Elections matter. Leadership matters. Laws and public policies can help or harm people, families, churches, and communities. Christians should pray, seek wisdom, participate responsibly, and care about what happens in government.

But an election cannot save us.

Our deepest problem is sin, and our greatest hope is Jesus Christ. Jesus died for our sins, rose from the dead, and offers forgiveness and eternal life to everyone who trusts in Him. Governments change, leaders come and go, and political movements rise and fall, but Jesus Christ remains Lord.

As we pray during the 2026 election season, may we ask God for wise and righteous leadership while keeping our confidence firmly in Him. May we faithfully pray, wisely participate, love our neighbors, share the gospel, and trust God’s sovereign purposes whatever the outcome of the election.
