1 John 5:11–13 says, “And this is what God has testified: He has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God’s Son does not have life. I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life.”
These verses are a foundation for assurance. God wants every believer to know with confidence that eternal life is found in Jesus Christ alone. This is not meant to be uncertain or fragile. Through faith in Christ, we receive real, lasting life. Yet Scripture also warns that in the last days many will turn away from the faith. Jesus said in Matthew 24:10–12, “Many will turn away from me and betray and hate each other. And many false prophets will appear and will deceive many people. Sin will be rampant everywhere, and the love of many will grow cold.”
Paul wrote in 1 Timothy 4:1, “Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons.” This falling away is not only a cultural trend but a fulfillment of biblical prophecy. It shows the reality of spiritual warfare in our time. The enemy is actively working to pull people away from Christ, weaken their faith, and keep them from walking in the assurance that God offers through his Son.
The Falling Away in Our Time
In recent decades, this warning has become visible in striking ways. Millions of people in America who once identified as Christians have walked away from the faith. Since the year 2000, about 30 million Americans who once regularly attended church and prayed have now left, and many no longer even believe God exists. Some drift quietly, others are led astray by false teaching, and some openly abandon their former beliefs. It is a sobering reminder that faith must be rooted deeply in Christ and his Word.
The Bible warns that in the last days false teaching will increase, spiritual deception will spread, and many hearts will grow cold. The enemy uses subtle and persistent strategies to pull people away from truth. He works through false doctrine that appeals to worldly desires, through doubts that are left unaddressed, and through cultural pressure that tempts believers to compromise. Unless our faith is anchored in the unchanging Word of God, we are vulnerable to these attacks.
A Resource Worth Sharing
I came across a video from Allen Parr that speaks directly to this reality. He outlines three key ways the enemy works to lead people away from Christ: shallow faith, unprocessed doubt, and cultural pressure and persecution. He then offers biblical ways to stand strong. I believe this is worth watching and reflecting on deeply.
Standing Firm in a Time of Spiritual Drift
To stand firm in the last days, believers must be deeply rooted in Scripture, not surface-level in their faith. We must grow in sound doctrine and hold fast to what God has revealed, even when culture pushes back. We must press into God during trials rather than pulling away, trusting him when life gets difficult. And we must stay closely connected to a faithful spiritual community that encourages, corrects, and supports us.
The storms of doubt, temptation, and persecution will come, but when our lives are built on the solid foundation of Christ and his Word, we can endure and thrive. The enemy may try to pull us away, but through Christ we can stand firm.
What You Must Do to Be Saved
The most important question anyone can answer is where they stand with Jesus Christ. Salvation is not something we earn through good works or religious activity. It is God’s free gift through Jesus. Ephesians 2:8–9 says, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast.”
Here is what the Bible teaches about being saved:
- Recognize your need for salvation. All people have sinned and fall short of God’s standard (Romans 3:23). Sin separates us from God and brings spiritual death (Romans 6:23).
- Believe in Jesus Christ. Jesus, God’s Son, came to earth, lived a sinless life, died on the cross for our sins, and rose from the dead. He is the only way to God. Acts 16:31 says, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved.” Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).
- Repent and turn to God. Repentance is not just feeling sorry for sin. It is turning away from sin and turning toward God in faith (Acts 3:19).
- Confess Jesus as Lord and trust him completely. Romans 10:9–10 says, “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.”
- Call on him in faith. Romans 10:13 says, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” You can respond to God personally in prayer, expressing your faith and surrender to Jesus.
Here is a simple example of such a prayer:
God, I know that I have sinned against you and cannot save myself. I believe that Jesus died on the cross for my sins and rose again. I turn from my sin and place my trust in Jesus as my Lord and Savior. Please forgive me, make me new, and help me follow you. Amen.
Salvation is the beginning of a new life in Christ. Those who trust in Jesus are forgiven, reconciled to God, adopted into his family, and given the assurance of eternal life. 1 John 5:13 reminds us that those who believe in the name of the Son of God can know that they have eternal life.
If you find yourself drifting, doubting, or feeling distant from God, this is the time to turn back. Jesus is ready to forgive and restore anyone who comes to him. He offers real assurance, not based on your performance but on his finished work on the cross. If you have walked away or grown cold, call out to him today. Come back to the Savior who has not given up on you.
