Why Do People Skip Church? A New Study Reveals Surprising Reasons

A recent Lifeway Research study highlights the many reasons some U.S. Protestant churchgoers choose to skip Sunday worship—sometimes even regularly. While safety during severe weather is a top concern (77%), other common reasons include enjoying good weather outdoors (55%), getting extra sleep (54%), meeting up with friends (50%), avoiding rain (43%), and watching sports (42%).

Only 11% say they would never skip church for any of those reasons. Attendance habits also vary by age, region, and commitment level. Evangelicals and older churchgoers are among the least likely to miss worship, while younger attendees and those with lighter attendance patterns are more likely to stay home.

As Scott McConnell of Lifeway Research notes, “Churchgoers are not on autopilot. Each week they are faced with a choice.” And as pastors and church leaders can attest, it’s tough to pour your heart into preparing a sermon and leading worship every week while watching many people treat church as optional. Faithful ministry can feel discouraging when commitment to attending worship is inconsistent.

But Scripture reminds us of the importance of gathering: “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching” (Hebrews 10:25, NIV). Jesus also taught us to “seek first His kingdom and His righteousness” (Matthew 6:33), and prioritizing church attendance is one tangible way to live that out.

Let’s keep encouraging one another to show up, stay connected, and make worship a central part of our walk with Christ.
