How to Trust God and Thrive in Uncertainty

As we step into a new year, many of us find ourselves reflecting on the past and anticipating what lies ahead. The turning of the calendar offers a natural opportunity to evaluate our lives, set new goals, and seek a fresh sense of purpose. In a recent sermon based on Psalm 37, I encouraged us to anchor our plans for 2025 in trust, delight, and commitment to the Lord. Drawing from David’s wisdom, I shared some principles that I believe can help us navigate life’s uncertainties with faith and intentionality.

Trust in the Lord and Do Good

Psalm 37:3 begins with a simple yet profound directive: “Trust in the Lord and do good.” Trusting God is foundational to a life of faith. While we cannot control every aspect of the coming year, we can trust in the One who holds the future. This trust isn’t passive—it’s active and demonstrated by doing good in our daily lives.

In practical terms, trusting God means resisting the fear and envy that creep in when we see others seemingly prosper through wrongdoing. David’s assurance that “like the grass they will soon wither” (Psalm 37:2) reminds us to focus on the eternal rather than the temporary. I’ve seen how fleeting worldly success can be, and I hope to encourage all of us to place our hope in God’s enduring promises.

Doing good doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s about being intentional in how we treat others—whether that’s helping a neighbor, volunteering, or simply showing kindness. Even the smallest unseen deeds matter because God sees them all. That’s such a comforting thought, isn’t it? Knowing that what we do for others—even when no one else notices—brings joy to our Heavenly Father.

Delight in the Lord

One of my favorite verses in Psalm 37 is verse 4: “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” I love this verse because it reminds me that God wants us to enjoy Him, not just follow Him out of duty. Delighting in the Lord is about finding joy and satisfaction in a relationship with Him. It’s not a chore—it’s a privilege.

When we truly delight in the Lord, our desires begin to change. The more time we spend with God—whether in prayer, worship, or reading Scripture—the more our hearts align with His will. It’s like what Matthew 6:33 says: “Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” When our priorities are in line with God’s, everything else just seems to fall into place.

I’ve found that one of the best ways to delight in the Lord is to make time for Him every day. Whether it’s reading through the Bible in a year, taking a walk and praying, or just pausing to thank Him for the little blessings in life, these moments of connection are life-changing. And trust me, the more you do it, the more you’ll want to keep doing it. It becomes a source of joy that nothing else can match.

Commit Your Way to the Lord

Psalm 37:5 tells us to “commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this.” I’ve learned that commitment requires surrendering control, which isn’t always easy. But it’s so worth it. When we commit our plans to God, we’re inviting Him to take the lead—and that’s when amazing things happen.

Committing our way to the Lord means seeking His direction in every area of our lives. Whether it’s decisions about work, family, or personal growth, letting God guide us transforms our plans from self-centered ambitions to God-inspired goals. I’ve seen this play out in my own life so many times, and it’s incredible to watch how God’s plans are always better than anything I could have come up with on my own.

Of course, trusting in God’s timing is a big part of this. Waiting on the Lord can be hard, especially when we’re eager for answers. But Psalm 37:7 reminds us to “be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him.” In those moments of stillness, we learn to trust that God’s plans are perfect, even if they don’t happen on our timeline.

Reflecting on 2024 and Setting Goals for 2025

As we approach 2025, I’ve been reflecting on this past year. What did we accomplish? How did we grow? What challenges did we face? And how did we see God at work? Reflection isn’t about dwelling on regrets but celebrating God’s faithfulness and looking for ways to grow.

Looking ahead, I’ve been thinking about the goals I want to set for the new year. Maybe you’ve been doing the same. What are the things God is calling you to focus on in 2025? For some, it might be reading through the Bible or deepening your prayer life. For others, it might be stepping out in faith to serve in a new way or investing more intentionally in relationships.

One thing I’ve found helpful is writing down my goals and sharing them with someone I trust. Accountability makes a huge difference, and it’s always encouraging to have someone cheering you on. And don’t forget to celebrate the little victories along the way—they add up to big progress over time.

Communion: A Time for Reflection and Renewal

We closed the sermon with a time of communion, which felt like the perfect way to end the year. Communion is such a powerful reminder of what Jesus has done for us. It’s a time to examine our hearts, confess any sin, and recommit our lives to Him.

As I led the church in communion, I reflected on Hebrews 12, where we’re encouraged to strip off every hindrance and fix our eyes on Jesus. What better way to start a new year than by focusing on Him? Communion isn’t just a ritual; it’s a moment to renew our commitment to living for Jesus and to thank Him for the incredible gift of salvation.

Embracing 2025 with Confidence

As we step into 2025, I’m asking myself: How will I glorify Jesus this year? And I want to challenge you to ask the same. None of us knows what the year will bring, but we can approach it with confidence knowing that our future is secure in Christ.

Let’s trust in the Lord, delight in His presence, and commit our way to Him. Let’s set goals that matter for eternity and live with intentionality. This new year is a fresh opportunity to grow in our faith, serve others, and make an impact for God’s kingdom. I’m excited to see what God will do in my life and in yours. Let’s walk into 2025 with hope, knowing that when we seek the Lord, He will guide us every step of the way.
