A Song of Hope Beyond This Life
Living the Christian life means trusting in something greater than what we see. It means believing that this world is not our final home, and that death—though painful—is not the end for those who are in Christ. That’s why the song “When I’m Gone” by Roy Tosh hits so close to home for me. It captures the hope I have because of Jesus and expresses what I would want people to hear at my funeral someday.
As a pastor, I’ve had the privilege of leading many funerals and memorial services. Sometimes, people leave a list of Scriptures, songs, and words they want shared when they’re gone. When I heard this song, I thought, “This is one I’d want sung at mine.” It speaks clearly and beautifully about the life to come, the peace we can have in Jesus, and the encouragement we can leave behind for others.
I believe that when I die—unless Jesus returns first—I will immediately be in the presence of my Savior. I’ve repented of my sin and placed my faith in Jesus, and by His grace, I’ve been adopted into God’s family, filled with His Spirit, and given the promise of eternal life in Heaven. This song puts into words the assurance and peace that comes from that hope.
It’s also deeply meaningful to me because my adult son has already gone to be with Jesus. When I listen to this song, it reminds me that he is more alive now than ever—whole, rejoicing, and free from all pain. That brings comfort on even the hardest days. Maybe this song will encourage you too, whether you’re grieving, reflecting on eternity, or just needing to be reminded that God keeps His promises.

LYRICS:
V1
Yea, And when it’s all
Said and done I’ll be still standing tall
Caught up in a cloud of glory soon as the trumpet calls
Yea, so when I’m gone
And the time comes for me to move on
Joining with the angels singing holy around His throne
So tell my momma to dry her eyes
I’ll be home on the other side
Where the streets made of gold and the gates is open wide
I’ve passed on but my souls alive
Fully known with nothing to hide
Spreading wings like an eagle and I can’t wait to fly
I’m alive
HOOK:
When I’m Gone,
Don’t you miss me
When I’m gone
Don’t ya cry
I’m not too far away, just right on the otherside
Play this song when ya drifting all alone at night
When I’m gone
Don’t you miss me
When I’m gone
Oh, when I’m gone
V2
Pure perfection, no more broken
All the answers no more hopin’
Been a long journey but it’s cool cuz I’m home now, home now
we marchin’ now we all on the way
Song of the saints for all of our days
You see the joy on all of our face
It won’t go away
Now hear us say
HOOK
Bridge:
And I know you feel alone
Hold on cuz you’re almost home
In the arms of the everlasting love
And even though you miss me
And my body can’t be seen
I’m here rejoicing with the Lord
And I feel so alive
Here is Roy Tosh sharing the reason he wrote this song
11 And this is what God has testified: He has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God’s Son does not have life. 13 I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life. 1 John 5:11-13 (NLT)
