Fixed: View Adobe Acrobat Thumbnails in File Explorer on Windows 11 (Updated 2025)
If you open a folder of PDFs and only see blank icons instead of preview thumbnails, you’re not alone. This was a common frustration back in Windows 10 and still happens occasionally on Windows 11. Thankfully, Adobe has made this much easier to fix.
After years of frustration with patches and add-on programs, Adobe finally fixed their Windows Explorer PDF thumbnail view issue, and I am delighted they did. When I first wrote about this back in 2016, the only way to get thumbnails working on a 64-bit Windows system was through complicated registry edits or third-party tools. Now, it works like it should—right out of the box.
I’m currently using the latest version of Adobe Acrobat DC on a Windows 11 computer (and it still works on Windows 10). Just like Adobe’s support site says, to enable thumbnail previews go to Preferences > General and then select Enable PDF thumbnail previews in Windows Explorer. I’m not sure why they didn’t fix this years ago, but I’m thankful they finally did. I wanted to share this update since I know there are still many frustrated people out there waiting for this good news.
Step 1: Check the Setting in Adobe Acrobat or Reader
- Open Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Acrobat Reader DC.
- Go to Edit → Preferences → General.
- Scroll to the Basic Tools section.
- Check the box labeled Enable PDF thumbnail previews in Windows Explorer.
- Click OK and wait while Acrobat updates the setting.
This option now works on both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 11.

Step 2: Make Sure File Explorer Is Set to Show Thumbnails
Windows sometimes hides thumbnails to improve performance.
- Open File Explorer.
- Choose View → Show → Preview Pane.
- Open Folder Options → View, then confirm Always show icons, never thumbnails is unchecked.
- Click Apply and reopen your folder.

Step 3: Set Acrobat or Reader as the Default PDF App
If another program is handling PDFs, Explorer may skip generating previews.
- Right-click any PDF → Open with → Choose another app.
- Select Adobe Acrobat Reader DC.
- Check Always use this app to open .pdf files, then click OK.
You can also change this in Settings → Apps → Default apps → Choose defaults by file type (.pdf).
Step 4: Clear the Thumbnail Cache
If previews still don’t appear, your cache may be corrupted.
- Search for Disk Cleanup and open it.
- Select your system drive (C:).
- Check Thumbnails, click OK, then Delete Files.
- Restart your computer.
Step 5: Keep Everything Updated
Make sure both Adobe Acrobat and Windows are fully updated. Newer releases fix many preview bugs automatically.
What’s Changed Since 2016
Adobe’s preview generator is now built in and compatible with modern 64-bit Windows. Registry hacks and third-party utilities are no longer needed. If previews still fail, it’s usually because Windows has disabled preview handlers for performance or security reasons; the steps above usually fix that.
Summary
PDF thumbnail previews are reliable again. Just make sure Acrobat’s setting is on, Explorer is allowed to show thumbnails, and your software is current.
