Communions Promise: Jesus will Return

Every moment we live brings us closer to an extraordinary event—Jesus’ promised return. On what may feel like an ordinary day, with its appointments, errands, and routines, our Savior could return to take His followers home. The question is, are you ready?

Remembering Through Communion

As believers, we regularly gather to share in communion, a sacred act of remembrance. It’s not just a tradition—it’s a proclamation of Christ’s death and resurrection until He comes again. The bread reminds us of His broken body, the cup of His shed blood. These elements symbolize the sacrifice Jesus made to save us from sin and offer us eternal life.

In 1 Corinthians 11:26, Paul writes, “For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.” Communion reminds us not only of the past but also of the future. We partake in hope, eagerly awaiting His return.

The Promise of His Return

Throughout Scripture, we are reminded of Jesus’ promise to return. When He ascended into heaven, the angels declared, “This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven” (Acts 1:11). His return is not a distant myth—it’s a certain reality.

However, if life is comfortable and fulfilling, it’s easy to lose sight of the urgency of this promise. Yet, for those burdened by life’s challenges, the thought of Jesus returning is a source of immense hope. His return promises an end to suffering, the beginning of eternal righteousness, and life in His glorious presence.

Living with Readiness

Peter’s words in 2 Peter 3 challenge us to live in readiness for Christ’s return. He writes to believers enduring persecution, urging them to remember the truth and live holy, godly lives. Peter reminds us that God’s timing is not our own: “With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:8-9).

God’s patience is an opportunity for us to share the gospel and lead others to salvation. Our daily lives should reflect the urgency of the message and the hope of eternity.

A Call to Repentance and Witness

While we await His return, God calls us to repentance. Turning away from sin and toward Christ is not merely about remorse but about transformation. It’s about living in a way that honors God and draws others to Him.

Jesus also commanded His followers to be witnesses. In Matthew 24:14, He said, “This gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.” Whether through personal conversations, supporting missionaries, or leveraging technology, we are called to make Christ known.

Staying Ready for His Return

In Luke 12:35-40, Jesus uses the analogy of servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding feast. The faithful servants are ready, their lamps burning, eager to open the door the moment He arrives. Jesus concludes, “You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect Him” (Luke 12:40).

Being ready means living with purpose, sharing Christ’s message, and staying faithful. It’s about living each day as though it might be the day He returns.

The Hope of Eternity

For believers, the promise of Jesus’ return is a source of great joy. It’s a reminder that no matter how challenging life may be, there is an eternal future filled with righteousness, peace, and the presence of God. As Revelation 22:12 declares, “Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done.”

Final Reflection

As we celebrate communion, remember Christ’s sacrifice, anticipate His return, and reflect on how you’re living today. Who are you sharing the message of hope with? Are you ready for His return? Now is the time to recommit your life to Christ, share His love with others, and live in the light of His promises.

Let’s be found faithful and ready, proclaiming His message of hope until the day we meet Him face-to-face. Are you ready for Jesus to return?
