Real Faith – Discernment and Authenticity

As a pastor, my heart is to guide and encourage believers to walk faithfully with Christ, living lives that are authentic, Spirit-filled, and discerning. In our fast-paced, information-saturated world, where countless voices claim to speak on behalf of God, it’s vital that we anchor ourselves in Scripture and the truth of the Gospel. In my message, Living for God with Authenticity and Discernment, I shared some concerns and encouragements about navigating the challenges of modern faith while remaining steadfast in our commitment to God.

Why Authenticity Matters in Our Faith

Authenticity is foundational to a vibrant and meaningful relationship with God. In John 4:23-24, Jesus speaks to the Samaritan woman at the well and says, “True worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”

This passage reminds us that our worship and relationship with God must be rooted in truth and guided by the Holy Spirit. Authenticity in our faith is not about perfection or appearance—it’s about being real before God, confessing our struggles, seeking His will, and living in obedience to His Word.

As a pastor, I’ve seen how disingenuous faith can drive people away from Christ. When we offer a shallow or surface-level representation of the Gospel, or when our lives fail to reflect Christ’s character, we risk misrepresenting Him to a watching world. Authenticity requires that we humbly admit our own need for God’s grace while striving to live out the transformation He works in us.

The Danger of Counterfeit Miracles and False Prophecy

Along with the need for authenticity, I am deeply concerned about the prevalence of counterfeit miracles and reckless claims of prophecy in today’s church. The Bible repeatedly warns us to be on guard against false teachers and those who misuse God’s name. In Matthew 24:24, Jesus warned, “For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.”

I’ve noticed how some well-meaning believers are drawn to spiritual claims that promise blessings, breakthroughs, or special revelations. While God certainly performs miracles and speaks to His people, not everything that is labeled as “prophetic” or “miraculous” is from Him. Satan is described as masquerading as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14), and his goal is to distort the truth and lead us astray.

It’s heartbreaking to see how reckless claims of prophecy can harm individuals and the church. When someone declares “Thus says the Lord” without Scriptural support or confirmation, they risk leading others into confusion and disappointment. Deuteronomy 18:20-22 makes it clear that false prophets are those whose words do not come to pass because God did not send them.

As your pastor, I urge you to exercise discernment. Don’t blindly accept every claim as truth. Test everything against the Word of God, as the Bereans did in Acts 17:11. They “examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.” We, too, must evaluate spiritual claims through the lens of Scripture, seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Encouragement to Pursue Discernment

Discernment is a gift of the Spirit that every believer needs in these challenging times. First John 4:1 reminds us: “Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” This doesn’t mean we become cynical or closed off, but it does mean we approach spiritual matters with wisdom and care.

Here are four practical tests to help you discern what is authentic and what is not:

  1. The Theological Test: Does the message align with Scripture? God will never contradict His Word.
    • Galatians 1:6-9 warns against accepting any gospel other than the one revealed in Scripture.
  2. The Emphasis Test: Does the message exalt Jesus and point to His glory, or does it focus on the messenger or worldly benefits?
    • True prophecy should always lead us closer to Christ.
  3. The Moral Test: Does the person delivering the message exhibit Christlike character? Are their words producing godly fruit in others?
    • Matthew 7:15-20 reminds us that “by their fruit you will recognize them.”
  4. The Accuracy Test: Have their past words or prophecies proven true? If someone claims to speak for God but their words do not come to pass, they are not speaking truthfully.

How We Can Be Authentic and Discern Truth

Living authentically and discerning truth requires a few key commitments:

  • Walk in the Spirit: Yield to the Holy Spirit’s work in your life. Let Him produce His fruit in you and guide you in all truth (John 16:13).
  • Stay Anchored in the Word: Scripture is our ultimate authority. All claims, teachings, and spiritual experiences must align with it (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
  • Pray for Wisdom: James 1:5 promises that if we lack wisdom, we can ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault.
  • Be Willing to Test: Don’t fear examining spiritual claims. As 1 Thessalonians 5:21-22 says, “Test everything. Hold on to what is good, reject every kind of evil.”

My Heart as a Shepherd

As a pastor, my calling is to shepherd God’s people with care, pointing them toward Jesus and helping them grow in their faith. I want to encourage you to live authentically for Christ, being real with Him and with others. I also want to protect you from the dangers of false teachings and counterfeit spiritual experiences that can distract and harm.

God has given us everything we need for life and godliness through His Word and His Spirit (2 Peter 1:3). We don’t need to chase after the latest spiritual trends or sensational claims. Instead, we can rest in the unchanging truth of God’s promises, confident that He will guide us, provide for us, and work in our lives for His glory.

Let’s commit together to live for God with authenticity and discernment, shining as lights in a world that desperately needs to see the real, transforming power of Jesus Christ. May He lead us, protect us, and use us to advance His kingdom.
