1. DEFINED

 1. The word “disciple” literally means A LEARNER

  2. According to Vine’s Expository Dictionary Of New Testament Words, it denotes “one who follows another’s teaching”

  3. But a disciple was not only a learner, he was also AN ADHERENT

  4. For this reason disciples were spoken of as IMITATORS of their teachers.

  • Stated by Jesus himself: the goal in being a disciple is to be like the teacher.  “A student is not above his teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher.”  Luke 6:40
     
  • According to the apostle Paul, God’s goal in the redemption of mankind, that they be conformed to the image of His Son. “For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son…”  Romans 8:29

2. DISCOVERS

A. True Life Mission

  • For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.”  Luke 19:10 (NIV)
  • True Life through Jesus
  • But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. John 20:31 (NIV)

3. DESIRES

A. To Follow Jesus

  • To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. John 8:31 (NIV)

B. To Love Others

  • 34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
  • John 13:34-35 (NIV)

C. To Be Productive

  • This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
  • John 15:8 (NIV)

D. To Be a Light

  • In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16 (NIV)

4. DECIDES

A. To Put Jesus Before Others

  • “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters–yes, even his own life–he cannot be my disciple.  – Luke 14:26 (NIV)

B. To Put Jesus First in their lives

  • 23 Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it. 25 What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self?  Luke 9:23-25 (NIV)

C. To Endure Persecution

  • In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,
  • 2 Timothy 3:12 (NIV)

D. To Pursue Future Rewards

  • “Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done.” Revelation 22:12 (NIV)
  • 28 Then Peter began to speak up. “We’ve given up everything to follow you,” he said. 29 “Yes,” Jesus replied, “and I assure you that everyone who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or property, for my sake and for the Good News, 30 will receive now in return a hundred times as many houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and property—along with persecution. And in the world to come that person will have eternal life.
